To celebrate multicultural month we’re giving you a run-down of the best cultural things to see and do in Newcastle. From modern art to classic cinema to hilarious comedy, there’s something for everyone!

BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art

The BALTIC centre houses some of the finest contemporary art in the North East. Not only that, but with 2,600 square metres of art space, it is the UK’s largest dedicated contemporary art institution. With its inspiring and experimental exhibitions, it’s the perfect place to immerse yourself and think about something other than your university course for a few hours!

Tyneside Cinema

Since it opened its doors as a news theatre in 1937, Tyneside Cinema has welcomed visitors with its stunning interior and diverse range of showings. From the latest Hollywood releases, to independent films to old-school classics, the cinema boasts a wealth of culture for you to explore. With an art exhibition space and 3 onsite bar-cafes, it’s the perfect cultural excursion.

Theatre Royale

The Theatre Royale is located in a fantastic Grade 1 listed building on Grey Street. Its 400+ annual performances sees audiences of over 400,000, making it one of Newcastle’s most popular cultural hotspots. Each year, the Theatre becomes home to West End musicals, comedies, ballets and operas as well as a whole host of family friendly shows, including its famous Christmas pantomime.

The Northern Stage

If independent theatre is more your thing, then look no further than The Northern Stage. Located right in the heart of campus, it hosts a variety of small productions throughout the year, some of which are produced by our very own Newcastle University Theatre Society. They also run interactive sessions and workshops for young people, so you’re really able to get involved!

The Stand Comedy Club

Looking for an evening of laugh-out-loud entertainment in Newcastle? Then The Stand Comedy Club is not to be missed. There are comedy shows every night of the week, hosting everyone from big-name comedians to complete novices. Their famous ‘Red Raw’ open mic night takes place every Wednesday and allows you to see some fantastic comedy for just £3!
