NBS – the leading technology platform for the global construction industry

Following a successful visit to NBS in 2018, MBA students accompanied by their Digital Business Lecturer, Dr Rebecca Casey, were treated to a special tour of the spectacular premises at NBS HQ on St Nicholas Street, Newcastle in May 2019. Greeted by Tim Bellhouse, Head of Global Customer Support, the visitors were shown around the beautiful grade II listed building. Spanning four floors accommodating more than 200 people, the historic façade is representative of the city’s architectural standing. Beyond the pillars is a spectacular, modern office building which includes a public gallery, training facilities, gym and roof terrace. Rather than the traditional cellular offices, NBS employees enjoy large open spaces with acoustic office pods and dedicated collaborative spaces to facilitate cooperative and agile ways of working. Whiteboards are full with colourful story points and process mapping, characteristic of their agile and customer focused culture.

Presentations from members of the senior management team covered the digital transformation journey of NBS from digitised construction specifications to their latest cloud offering, NBS Chorus, a “technology platform for the construction industry”. Market leaders in Business Information Modelling (BIM), digital 3-D simulations of objects and buildings, NBS products are used by architects, designers, engineers and contractors to deliver construction projects more efficiently and effectively. Jane Hibbert, Senior BIM Author, oversees a team responsible for the award-winning national BIM library of over 35,000 products, a resource which is free to use.  Meanwhile, Phil Scott, Head of software development emphasised the underlying importance of attracting the right talent to the business, “people are our most valuable resource”. In order to generate the value-added, students learned from Corporate Services Director, Lindi Teate, about the emphasis on behaviours and values rather than only individual competence and academic background. People at NBS are encouraged to be curious, collaborative, and ambitious, to act with integrity and be responsible for delivery and ownership of a product or project. Reflecting on their visit, students said NBS were a shining example of a global digital business home to the North East.
