My Post Application Visit Day

Why attending a Post Application Visit helped me narrow down my choices

When I went to the University Open Day in June, I was still unsure about which course I wanted to study so I used the day to attend a number of different talks within the Business School that I was interested in, including: Business Management, International Business Management, Marketing, and Marketing and Management. The Open Day really helped me to narrow down my choices.

I was pleased when I was invited to attend a Post Application Visit Day as this was a great opportunity to focus solely on finding more out about Business Management, the course I was most interested in, and to ask any questions that I had.

More in-depth course information

During the day there was a subject talk that went into more detail about my course than at the Open Day and covered things like:

  • the modules in first year and the optional modules in second and third year
  • the different types of assessments for each module
  • the skills developed throughout the course and how these are respected by employers

Finding out about placement opportunities and study abroad

There was also more information about the extra-curricular opportunities available, such as the opportunity to study abroad for a year, complete an industrial placement or get involved in global experience opportunities that included completing summer internships or attending events held within the business school by external speakers/employers about the latest issues and developments in their industry.

I was really impressed by the companies where students were working on placement and after graduation. This confirmed to me that Newcastle University graduates are respected by top graduate employers.

Meet the teaching team

I also had the chance to speak to lecturers following the session in the Partners’ Room (this was the first time that I had been in the Partner’s room on the 8th floor of the building which has a very impressive view of the city and you can even see the Quayside and Tyne Bridge from it – be sure to check it out on your visit!).

This part of the day confirmed for definite that I wanted to select Newcastle as my first choice on my UCAS form because the lecturers were so friendly and approached me to ask if I had any questions rather than waiting for me to go over to them. The day showed me that the lecturers are approachable and that if I had any issues during my studies then I would be able to go to them for help. They were able to explain to me in more detail about the different types of assessments for different modules and cleared up any concerns that I had.

…and students studying at Newcastle

It was also a good opportunity to talk to current students to find out about their experiences of the course, such as how they coped with the transition from A-Level to University and how they managed with the change in workload. They also shared their student experiences, such as how they were finding living away from home and also recommendations on what accommodation to choose.

I would definitely recommend attending a Post Application Visit Day to get the answers to any final questions that you have and to help you decide which university to select as your first choice. Use it as a chance have a wander round the city, the University campus, and familiarise yourself with the facilities such as the Student’s Union where you can even grab a bite to eat during your visit.
