How to get over unsuccessful job applications

A lot of hard work and courage goes into sending in a single job application. Even more so when you’re applying for a placement scheme where you’ll be competing with thousands of others from across the nation.

After spending countless of hours perfecting your CV and cover letter, your worst nightmare is finding out that you haven’t been successful. There are so many application stages at which you face the possibility of rejection; from when you first send in your application to interviews and assessment centres, its definitely a long and tough process.

The reality is, however, that you’ll face a number of rejections before you land the perfect job for yourself. The most important thing to remember is to keep moving forward and take it as a learning experience more than anything else.

If you tried your absolute best and gave it your all at the interview or assessment centre but you were unsuccessful in your attempt, most times it doesn’t mean that you weren’t good enough or that the other person was better than you. Sometimes it just means that you weren’t the right fit for the position.

So, just take a few days, or longer if need be, to clear your mind and start afresh with your search after. Never compare your progress to your friends or course mates because everyone advances at a different rate.

Ask for feedback if you can from the companies you interviewed with. While most employers would refrain from doing so, it never hurts to try to find out where things could have gone better.

Reflect on your experiences at the interview or assessment centre and highlight your key strengths and weaknesses. Even though you didn’t get the job, you did get experiences on which you can improve on.

So keep your chin up and do your best! Remember, you can always drop into the Careers Service for extra help and advice with interview preparation, Monday to Friday between 11:00 and 16:30.

I am sad when I know that I was rejected by my ideal intership position working in ASTOM bank which organized by my Newcastle university business school. I want to know why they refused my application and want to know can I have opportunity again?

    1. Hi Liang, we’re sorry to hear that you’ve been unsuccessful with your application! Unfortunately, we don’t have any information about your application as this is all held with Atom Bank. You could try contacting Atom Bank for this information, however, most companies do not usually divulge this information. Don’t give up and continue applying for other opportunities that come along!
